Since its application in 1971, due to the heating power varying with the temperature changes along the heat tracing cable, the heated semiconductor core material behaves as a variable temperature resistor opposite to the heating temperature high/low trend. Self-regulating heat tracing cables have become the most common type of heat tracing cables in the world today. They can be widely used for transporting liquid objects in pipelines and anti-freeze insulation of tanks, maintaining process temperature, heating roads, ramps, pedestrian crossings, eaves, floors, etc.

Self-regulating heat tracing cables have semiconductor polymer material distributed between two conductive cores for heating, and the exterior consists of an inner polymer jacket, an alloy shielding mesh, and an outer polymer jacket. When current passes through, as the temperature of the heat tracing cable rises, the cable resistance also increases. As a result, the output power of the heat tracing cable decreases as its temperature increases. Since the heating power varies with the temperature changes along the heat tracing cable, the heated semiconductor core material behaves as a variable temperature resistor opposite to the heating temperature high/low trend. Self-regulating heat tracing cables will not overheat even when overlapped. Without special design, self-regulating heat tracing cables can be cut to any working length on site to precisely match the actual laying length of the pipeline, requiring no special tools and being very easy to install.
